The Fuse Deployed Engineer
Palantir popularized the forward deployed engineer. Here's how Fuse thinks about the role.
Palantir has invented and popularized the position of FDE, forward deployed engineer.
What's a Fuse Deployed Engineer?
A Fuse Deployed Engineer infuses and extends already successful software with AI capabilities. Often, they do this from the office of the company that made that software or from the offices of the customers of that software.
Targets and incentives
The Fuse Deployed Engineer has a clear target when working on a feature. Like 50% adoption. They get a bonus for hitting the target early. With every passing month, the bonus decreases. Fuse Deployed Engineers are incentivized for customer value and speed.
Side projects
At least 1 day a week, a Fuse Deployed Engineer takes a break from their current mission. This is non-negotiable. On that day, they work on an idea they can't get out of their head, or a process improvement that helps the team be faster, or spin out a generalized tool from their current project. Gmail started out of Paul Bucheit's 20% time at Google. Fuse leans in on side-projects if they can be useful to more people.
All of the above fits the description of a Fuse Deployed Engineer. Except that we don't call ourselves "Fuse Deployed Engineers".
